What is Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy?
Musculoskeletal (MSK) Physiotherapy is the clinical assessment and treatment of the body’s mechanical system, including the muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, fascia, and nerves that make movement possible.
Unlike general wellness approaches, MSK physiotherapy is diagnostic. Your physiotherapist conducts a thorough orthopaedic assessment to identify the true structural cause of your pain, rather than treating symptoms in isolation. We apply a biopsychosocial model that considers not just the injury, but how movement patterns, lifestyle, and chronic stress contribute to your condition.
Whether you woke up with a stiff neck, are managing acute and chronic pain, or are recovering from a musculoskeletal injury, the clinical goal is the same: restore structural balance and prevent recurrence.
The tissues we assess and treat include:
- Muscles and Tendons: strains, tears, tendinopathy, overuse injuries
- Ligaments: sprains, joint instability, post-surgical rehab
- Fascia and Nerves: myofascial pain syndrome, nerve compression, sciatica
- Joints: osteoarthritis, mobility restriction, post-fracture rehabilitation
- Spinal Discs: disc herniation, nerve root compression, referred pain
Musculoskeletal Conditions We Treat: From Head to Toe
Our Registered Physiotherapists assess and treat the full spectrum of orthopaedic and musculoskeletal conditions across all anatomical regions.
Spine and Back Care (Cervical, Thoracic, Lumbar)
The spine is involved in nearly every movement pattern the body performs. We treat:
- Neck Pain (Cervical): Tech neck, chronic stiffness, and whiplash from motor vehicle accidents (ICBC)
- Low Back Pain: Muscle strain, lumbar disc herniation, and sciatic nerve compression
- Trigger Point Pain: Deep muscular knots in the back, glutes, and shoulders that refer pain to other regions
- Postural Conditions: Kyphosis correction and scoliosis management through targeted mobility and strengthening work
Upper Limb Rehabilitation
- Shoulder: Rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement, and frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
- Elbow and Hand: Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), golfer’s elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, and repetitive strain injuries (RSI)
- Jaw: TMJ dysfunction — clicking, locking, jaw pain, and tension headaches originating from the temporomandibular joint
Lower Limb and Sports Injuries
North Vancouver’s active lifestyle — Grouse Grind, mountain biking, trail running, skiing — creates specific patterns of overuse and impact injury. We treat:
- Hip and Knee: Bursitis, meniscus tears, patellofemoral pain, and post-surgical ACL rehabilitation
- Foot and Ankle: Ankle sprains, Achilles tendinopathy, and plantar fasciitis (heel pain)
- Sports Injuries: Overuse syndromes, muscle strains, ligament sprains, and return-to-sport programming
Work and Accident Recovery
We are a trusted provider for insurance-based rehabilitation in North Vancouver:
- ICBC / Motor Vehicle Accidents: Structured recovery programs for whiplash, soft tissue trauma, and post-MVA pain
- WorkSafeBC (WCB): Rehabilitation for workplace injuries with full claims documentation and return-to-work planning
Our Clinical Approach: Evidence-Based Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy
Every treatment plan begins with a comprehensive orthopaedic assessment. We identify not just where the pain is, but why it is there and what is maintaining it. Your individualized plan draws from:
Manual Therapy
Hands-on techniques including joint mobilization, spinal manipulation, and soft tissue release to restore range of motion and reduce joint restriction.
Therapeutic Exercise and Active Rehabilitation
Progressive exercise programs targeting core stabilization, neuromuscular control, strength, and functional movement, the foundation of durable recovery.
IMS / Dry Needling
Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS) targets deep muscular trigger points that do not respond to surface treatment. Particularly effective for chronic back pain, neck pain, and trigger point patterns.
Shockwave Therapy
High-energy acoustic wave therapy for chronic tendinopathies, including Achilles, rotator cuff, and plantar fasciitis, where tissue has failed to heal through standard means.
Education and Injury Prevention
Ergonomic assessment, posture correction, movement retraining, and self-management strategies so you stay recovered between sessions and prevent reinjury.
Multidisciplinary Care Under One Roof
Musculoskeletal conditions rarely exist in isolation. At Capilano Physiotherapy Clinic, your physiotherapist collaborates directly with our in-house specialists to build a complete recovery pathway:
- Kinesiologist: Active rehabilitation, functional strength conditioning, and return-to-sport or return-to-work programming once acute pain has resolved
- Registered Massage Therapy: Soft tissue work, circulation support, and nervous system regulation, particularly effective alongside physiotherapy for chronic pain and tension patterns
- Osteopathy: Whole-body structural assessment to identify compensatory patterns that may be driving your musculoskeletal symptoms
- Acupuncture: Complementary pain modulation for musculoskeletal and neurological conditions, including headaches, nerve pain, and chronic tension
- Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy: For musculoskeletal conditions with a pelvic component, including low back pain, hip dysfunction, and post-partum recovery

FAQs
What conditions does musculoskeletal physiotherapy treat?
MSK physiotherapy treats back pain, neck pain, sciatica, rotator cuff injuries, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel syndrome, knee pain, ACL injuries, plantar fasciitis, TMJ dysfunction, trigger point pain, kyphosis, lumbar disc herniation, and injuries from motor vehicle accidents or workplace incidents.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the condition, chronicity, and your consistency with the home exercise program. Some patients improve within 3 to 5 visits. Chronic or complex conditions typically require a longer structured program. We provide a realistic clinical estimate at your initial assessment.
Do you accept ICBC and WorkSafeBC (WCB) claims?
Yes. We are experienced in treating patients under ICBC motor vehicle accident claims and WorkSafeBC injury claims. We manage the documentation process and coordinate your recovery within the claims structure.
Is surgery always needed for a lumbar disc herniation?
Not always. A significant proportion of disc herniations resolve or become manageable with conservative physiotherapy, specifically core stabilization, neural mobilization, and manual therapy to reduce nerve compression and sciatica. Surgery is typically considered only when conservative care does not provide sufficient relief over time.
Do you treat arthritis and chronic pain conditions?
Yes. While osteoarthritis is progressive, physiotherapy is highly effective at managing pain, improving joint range of motion, and strengthening the surrounding musculature to offload stress from the affected joint, improving quality of life significantly.
